Review by Hans J. Wollstein

Imagine, if you will, an elderly cattle rancher staunchly refusing to let his range be dusted with a powerful chemical despite enormous pressure from his neighbors, the local banker and a crooning government inspector willing to defy the old gentleman by surreptitiously employing an airborne crop duster with little regard to the safety of those below. An environmental hero, you say? Well, in Sierra Sue Robert Homans's ornery George Larrabee is seen as a cantankerous old fool who refuses to embrace modernism. In contrast, Gene Autry's rather supercilious government agent is applauded for perhaps ruining the area's water table for generations. Ah, the good old days! Needless to say, Sierra Sue was never meant as an environmental statement in any way, shape or form but as a lively Gene Autry songfest with incidental comedy provided by Smiley Burnette, who this time even allows himself to be shot out of a canon. And as such it succeeds admirably.
