This drama was based on the play by James A. Herne, and was filmed again in 1920 with Alice Lake. A pair of brothers, Nathaniel and Martin Berry (Charles A. Stephanson and William Riley Hatch, respectively), inherit a farm. Nat, the kind brother, deeds the farm over to Martin, the hard-hearted one. When the brothers have a rivalry over a woman, Nat is the one who backs off. Years later, Nat is in charge of a lighthouse, while Martin's business affairs have become entangled with those of Josiah Blake (Edward J. Connelly). Martin has a daughter, Nell (Violet Horner), and Blake convinces him it would be a good idea if she married him. Nell, however, is already in love with Sam Warner, a young doctor (Conway Tearle). When Nell asks Nat for his advice, he suggests that she and Sam elope. Martin, his mind poisoned by Blake, goes chasing after the couple and finds them leaving on a boat. A storm is blowing, and he rushes to the lighthouse to stop Nat from filling the lamp which will guide the boat to safety. The brothers struggle and finally Nat is successful in lighting the lamp. The couple passes through the rough waters safely. After a year passes, Nat helps Martin and the young couple to reconcile.
