Synopsis by Mark Deming

Multi-media prankster and provocateur Malcolm McLaren fashioned this multi-part video art series, originally created as an installation presented in a group show at New York City's 1-20 Gallery. Each of Shallow's eight segments was created using footage from low-budget adult films of the 1960s. Each segment takes scenes that either preceded or followed the erotic sequences in the movies, and then slows the movement to the point that it can barely be seen, taking moments that may have been suggestive but barely provocative in their original context and forcing the viewer to look at the dreary images in a new light. Shallow was presented as part of the "Cutting The Edge" program at the 2009 Miami International Film Festival; it had previously been presented in Miami as part of an exhibition at the Standard Hotel in the fall of 2008.
