The unhappy struggle to make a go of life is at the core of this drama from Indonesian director Teguh Karya. After Oleh Togar (Alex Komang) arrives in Jakarta from his remote village in northern Sumatra, he is lucky to find a job as a newspaper reporter. But he is not the world's most talented man and his ineptitude starts to surface early on. At the same time, Oleh has taken up with Lola (Rina Hassim) and even though she is his landlady and runs a brothel on the side, his heart is still won over and he ends up taking her to his village after his father dies. Unfortunately, Oleh did not leave his misfortune behind in Jakarta.
