Review by Fred Beldin

This Indian-themed slasher film might seem less offensive if a single Native American was involved with the production, but it's evident that director Fred Olen Ray's intent was never to slight anyone. Scalps exists solely as a showpiece for low-budget gore effects, with sacred Indian burial grounds as a gimmick to hang them on. It's a moronic, amatuerish effort with a cast of youthful non-actors, extreme but unconvincing mayhem and terrible trouble keeping day and night straight throughout. Ray gets lots of mileage out of his juicier footage with flash-forwards that foreshadow the action and keep the gorehounds happy during the dull exposition scenes. There really isn't anyone else who will find Scalps amusing, even with a trio of venerated cult heroes in the cast (former serial Superman Kirk Alyn, ex-vampiress Carroll Borland, and professional horror fan Forrest J. Ackerman).
