A woman discovers her husband has been keeping a secret that could change the life they've built together in this drama. Fred (Bruno Ganz) and Anita (Senta Berger) are a couple in their mid-60s who have had a long and happy marriage; both have done well in their chosen fields and they've raised two children, Patrick (Barnaby Metschurat) and Karoline (Carina Wiese), into healthy and self-sufficient adulthood. After going through a divorce, Karoline is about to marry for the second time, and Patrick, in town for the wedding, is staying with his folks for a few days when Anita makes a startling discovery -- Fred has rented a second apartment in another part of town and hasn't told her about it. At first, Anita is convinced Fred is seeing another woman, but when she confronts him, she learns the truth is more serious -- Fred has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and he wants a space of his own should his condition worsen. Fred has opted against traditional cancer treatment and doesn't want surgery that could render him impotent, and now he, Anita and their children are faced with the notion that Fred may not be with them much longer.
