A superior "Red Ryder" series entry, The San Antonio Kid is Republic Pictures at its streamlined best: an adequate budget, almost serial-like action sequences (courtesy of ace stuntmen Henry Wills, Tom Steele, and, of course, Yakima Canutt), fast-paced direction, and good performances by a stock company that had done this sort of thing many times before and knew what they were doing. William "Wild Bill" Elliott's "Red Ryder" was always more serious-minded that his successor Allan Lane, and Bobby Blake, decades before Baretta, remains one of B-Western history's best-loved sidekicks. With ornery Republic blackguards Leroy Mason and Glenn Strange taking care of the villainy, a good time is had by all.
