Review by Craig Butler

Rhapsody is an unabashed "weeper," but only those with an extremely high tolerance for the clichés of the genre will enjoy this tedious cavalcade of exaggerated emotions. It's well cast for this sort of thing, with Elizabeth Taylor bringing all of her considerable star power to bear on a role that definitely requires as much help as it can get. Taylor looks stunning, of course, beautifully costumed by Helen Rose and radiant with the undeniable glow of youth, but there's only so much she can do with the stilted dialogue, hokey plot, and idiotic character "development." The rest of the cast is similarly hamstrung by this schmaltzy screenplay, but at least Vittorio Gassman and John Ericson are appropriately handsome, and Gassman at least hints at the talent he would display in later films. Charles Vidor's direction is remarkably uninspired and devoid of character, but at least he and cinematographer Robert Planck provide some beautiful shots of European scenery. There's also some lushly attractive music (especially by violinist Michael Rabin), which helps to soothe the ear between bouts of the movie's ludicrous dialogue.
