Review by Jeremy Wheeler

Though Progeny certainly isn't one of Brian Yunza's most accomplished films, it's miles above most of his other misses at bat in the low-budget horror world. Key to Re-Animator's creation and continued lifespan, the filmmaker has had a varied track record ever since that continues to confound his viewers in its subpar quality. As far as this sci-fi stunner goes, there's a refreshing surprise in store for those who dare go near it. Compared to the hilarious softcore scene in 1997's Lolida 2000, Progeny's story of alien impregnation is bloody and extreme, with a horrific inseminating scene that would come off totally goofy if it weren't so disturbingly played out. The Mummy himself, Arnold Vosloo, stars in the film, though it's really Jillian McWhirter as his wife, Sherry, who deserves praise for her fearless performance. Genre veteran Brad Dourif also shows up as -- surprise, surprise -- the creepy UFO expert! With a few tricks up its sleeve, Progeny is sure to fake out even seasoned horror fans. Not for the squeamish, the movie pulls little punches and even delivers on its heavy dramatics that could have sunk the film under different hands. The effects themselves range from silly to ultra gross and slimy, which almost makes up for the ridiculous, puffy grey aliens in the first half of the film.
