Although epic in scope, Prairie Schooners was soundly defeated by Columbia's miserly production methods and stock footage dating back to the 1920s. William Elliott, the "Peaceable Man," does his usual competent job as Hickock, but Dub Taylor's "Cannonball" character is slightly grating and Evelyn Young, late of the Three Stooges two-reelers, makes a rather pallid heroine. Still and all, the little Western manages to entertain those not expecting anything close to the grandeur of, say, The Covered Wagon (1923).
