Not yet a top star, Loretta Young is awarded second billing after comedy relief Winnie Lightner in this topical melodrama about the ravages of gambling. But she certainly is the film's main focal point and delivers a surprisingly potent performance as the beleaguered sales clerk. Norman Foster, who replaced the younger Tom Brown, does fine as the gambler and the Warner Bros. stock company provides the usual tough-talking mise-en-scéne. Star billed Winnie Lightner is, well, Winnie Lightner, and a small dose of Winnie goes a long way.
