Review by Craig Butler

Although it would be going a bit far to call Once More, My Darling an overlooked gem, it is surprising that this genial and very amusing little comedy isn't as well known among fans of older movies. Certainly, Darling has more than its share of weaknesses: the premise is a bit on the absurd side, Robert Montgomery's direction stumbles somewhat out of the gate (although when it gets its footing after the first 15 or 20 minutes, it does quite well) and the screenplay gets muddled in several places. However, these flaws are more than made up for by the above-average dialogue, the aura of fun that Montgomery's direction imparts and the fine cast that has been assembled for the picture. Winning top honors among the cast is Ann Blyth, giving a surprisingly funny performance that makes one wish she had been allowed to explore this vein of comedy more often in her career. Blyth lights up the screen and gives Darling an undeniable spark of energy. Putting on his actor's hat, Montgomery does quite well indeed, using his excellent "reactive" skills to their best advantage. Jan Cowl is impressive as Montgomery's mother, Lillian Randolph puts the appropriate amount of sass into her role and Taylor Holmes is amusing as the father with a Winston Churchill fixation. All added up, Darling's strengths outweigh its weaknesses, and the end product is quite entertaining indeed.
