Review by Michael Costello

Costa-Gavras and Joe Eszterhas re-team in this disappointingly empty thriller on the theme of abiding human blindness where loved ones are concerned. Jessica Lange stars as a trial lawyer who must defend her father (Armin Mueller-Stahl) against charges of having committed war crimes as a Nazi. More so than their previous collaboration that featured a similar subject (Betrayed, 1986), the film is a well-oiled low-key thriller. Even so, its potential for suspense is limited, given an ending that can be predicted early on. However, its greatest weakness is in the emptiness of the character of the father, who never seems like anything other than a nice, bewildered old man. No real attempt is made to connect the man with the past, to see events from his point of view, or to flesh him out in any substantial way. Yet Lange gives one of her best performances as a sensitive woman caught between devotion and a search for the truth, and Mueller-Stahl is as good as he can be under the circumstances. The subdued, dark-hued palette of cinematographer Patrick Blossier also complements the film's tone.
