Review by Craig Butler

Jack Pearl, the star of Meet the Baron, is a total unknown to modern audiences, and with good reason: he made only this film and 1934's Hollywood Party. Clearly, film was not his medium; he had made a smashing success in radio, but it was a meteoric rise-and-fall one, leaving him a name that only trivia masters recognize now. It would be nice to report that his was a talent shamefully neglected by Hollywood, but on the basis of Baron, it's hard to see what the attraction would have been, even on radio. Granted, Baron is a complete mess. The script is a bunch of skits thrown together, and most of the skits are not particularly memorable. (There is, however, an unbelievable musical number in the girls' shower that is a treat). Walter Lang would later helm a number of good musicals, but his work here is unimpressive. Fortunately, Pearl and the film have the other cast members to shore them up. Jimmy Durante does his familiar shtick, and it's a treat. Zasu Pitts is her usual silly self, and Edna May Oliver is dependably funny. Ted Healy is a stiff, but his "stooges" do some pretty good work in his shadow.
