Review by Craig Butler

Make Haste to Live could have used a bit more haste in its pacing. Although not a bad film, Haste doesn't live up to its opening. The first ten minutes or so are quite intriguing and gripping, as a menacing stranger lurks around Dorothy McGuire's house. There's a real promise of suspense and mystery that director William Seiter and writer Warren B. Duff build up here. Unfortunately, it dissipates rather quickly, and what we end up with is a story that strains credulity -- and our patience. Many of the elements in Haste have been used elsewhere, and to good effect. But the pieces simply don't gel here, and so they reveal themselves as artificial contrivances; the ending is especially disappointing. The cast certainly tries hard, with McGuire doing all that she can to make her part come alive, and Stephen McNally is appropriately sinister and oppressive. But they too soon fall into the ruts that the script sets up for them and have a hard time breaking free. Seiter shows flashes of imagination here and there, but not consistently enough to make Haste anything more than an average noir-ish flick. And he does allow things to drag too often.
