Synopsis by Nathan Southern
The titular vehicles of William Savage's aptly-named documentary Klunkerz are in fact pre-1941 bicycles, gamely converted into mountain bikes by ravenous thrill-seekers. Picturesque Marin County, California gave rise to the practice of mountain-biking in the post-war years, and witnessed many a forerunner pulling old models from such spots as dumpsters, junkyards and motorcycle graveyards, then putting his own personal safety on the line to test the cycles and perfect the sport per se. Now, in the 21st century, the mountain biking fad has spawned a multi-million dollar global industry. In his documentary, Savage takes a lengthy, fond glimpse at the history belying this international craze.
