A syrupy rendition of Dr. Gene Brewer's novel, K-Pax casts Kevin Spacey as a psychotic whose claims to be an alien named Prot are so convincing (his grasp of interplanetary physics is staggering and he's got a rather complex description of life on his home planet) that he has all of the terrestrials he comes across believing he really is a spaceman. Thrown into a psychiatric hospital in Manhattan, (Prot is appropriately found on Earth at Grand Central Station), Jeff Bridges stars as the shrink who takes it upon himself to get to the bottom of his patient's ailment and save him. Espousing such trite and tired sentiments having to do with patients who know more than their doctors and aliens who know more about life than humans, K-Pax puts an all-too-familiar spin on the old story of the benevolent stranger who arrives to teach some weary folks the meaning of life. Though director Iain Softley does his best to imbue his film with a stylish visual oeuvre, his repeated shots through prisms, wavy glass, and distorted mirrors feel more forced than effective. Audiences will ultimately wish Prot had never made the journey.
