Synopsis by Augustine Chay
Director Karim Aïnouz’s poignant drama is an adaptation of Brazilian writer Martha Batalha’s 2016 novel of the same name. In 1940s Rio de Janeiro, two devoted sisters are separated by their father’s lie after he disowns one of them for becoming pregnant out of wedlock. Hope, nostalgia, and resilience keep them alive as they long for reunion.
