Life in her Icelandic village has been boring for Ingalo for a long time, and the decision by local authorities to send her to Reykjavik for psychological assessment comes after she gets involved in a brawl at a dance hall. Her brother Sveinn accompanies her, and the two of them seek to make a go of it away from home. When the boy gets a job on a commercial fishing rig, she gets hired on as a cook. However, she has a real nose for trouble and gets involved with the boat's rebellious engineer Skúlli.
