A fairly haunting, if a bit slow, romance, I'll Never Forget You will most please those fans who like their romances tinged with a bit of science fiction or fantasy. Somewhat in the vein of the superior Portrait of Jennie, Forget is both a fish-out-of-water tale and a "two lives from different times" saga. It's an entertaining and fairly engrossing film, but it somehow falls short of being fully satisfactory. Part of the problem lies with Ranald MacDougall's screenplay, based upon a play (previously filmed) by John L. Balderston. It takes a little bit of time to get started, and even after it is started, we don't feel like we really understand why the lead character is as melancholy and dissatisfied as he is; had this been the kind of film in which such an enigmatic quality plays into the story, this would have been fine, but it's not. One also has a hard time believing that a man as intelligent as Peter would make some of the mistakes he does here. That said, there's plenty of romance and wistful longing here (played out in lush settings), and Tyrone Power is about all that one could wish of a hero of this sort. Ann Blyth is also quite winning, and Michael Rennie provides solid support; even better is Dennis Price, superlative and stealing scenes whenever given half a chance.
