Review by Karl Williams

The trouble with this film from screenwriter/director Charles Shyer and his real-life wife Nancy Myers isn't its concept (reviving the screwball romance) or the chemistry between stars Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte (which is, admittedly, at times barely apparent). The trouble's not even that the protagonists' jobs don't seem very well researched, their careers as newspaper reporters seemingly grafted wholesale from the portrayal of journalists in other movies, not from the work of real-life journalists The trouble, in fact, is that I Love Trouble is not enough of a romantic comedy or screwball romance and is far too much a thriller. The film has something to do with a bovine growth hormone that causes cancer and a corporate attempt to suppress this information from the public. Of course, this is simply the screenplay's reason to bring the leads together, but as story devices go, it's not a very funny or romantic one. The heroes end up in life-threatening danger so many times that the frothy tone and dialogue of sniping, amorous banter feels wildly inappropriate. In screwball romantic comedy, it's often the case that the biggest problem anybody faces is where to spend all their money while they figure out who to marry. I Love Trouble seems to forget this, presenting such a palpable menace that the flirtatious, nutty characters come off as deluded at best and demented at worst.
