Review by Hans J. Wollstein

A rather schizophrenic little sagebrush thriller, Heroes of the Saddle cannot quite make up its mind whether to be a Western or a modern-dress gangster yarn. Since the film starred the Three Mesqueteers, it was advertised as a Western, but city slickers may enjoy Byron Foulger playing a conniving orphanage director in his usually supercilious way and William Royle doing the gangster boss bit to perfection. Add Vince Barnett as a bumbling constable and a couple of cute kids, and you hardly need the Western scenery, which Republic seems to have added almost as an afterthought. Thus, whenever Robert Livingston, Raymond Hatton, and Duncan Renaldo leave town, they find themselves at the Iverson movie location, that favorite haunt of Republic oaters. It is almost as if they ride straight into another movie and an earlier century. Even Royle's henchman, Reed Howes, changes from modern clothes into Western garb whenever he leaves the sound stage. All of which was just par for the course for the Three Mesqueteers, who could never quite decide what century they should be in.
