Review by Lisa Kropiewnicki

Although the action described in this film's title is supposed to symbolize the disconnection of a passive-aggressive family, there are a few too many annoying dial tones to make this Ephron-sisters collaboration truly satisfying. Supporting performances are uniformly strong: director Diane Keaton seems to have a lot of fun playing the stylish, sophisticated, and self-absorbed media diva Georgia, while Lisa Kudrow is funny as an insecure soap opera actress, and Walter Matthau adds a wise complexity to the wise-cracking, Alzheimer's-afflicted Lou. Garnering the most screen time, however, is Meg Ryan, who once again plays her character as clumsy, cutesy, startled, and erratic (tripping over herself, falling out of bed, spilling cereal, dropping her keys, forgetting where she is, and so on). Ryan's potentially rich character would have benefited greatly from a more subtle and serious performance -- there's enough clowning around from the other characters -- and the film would have gained needed poignancy from a more grounded protagonist.
