Review by Craig Butler

Gran Casino may be a Luis Bunuel film, but it would be hard to discern this if one were to see the film without catching the credits. Very much a minor excursion, it's one that Bunuel did out of necessity, not because he had any personal connection to the material, and it shows. There's nothing wrong with making a film in order to earn a living, of course, but when one has the reputation of Bunuel, it causes people to expect more from every film. That's not to say that Casino is totally devoid of any Bunuel touches. There's a brief superimposition of a glass breaking in one scene that is very much in his style, and the decision to play a love scene by a fetid oil-laden pond, both of which seem very Bunuel. There's also a long tracking shot in the nightclub that, while not uniquely connected the director, still demonstrates his considerable skill. The screenplay is so much nonsense, but it tells its story in an acceptable, conventional manner. The stars are attractive and sing well, and the numbers are well laid out. It's perfectly acceptable minor entertainment; just not what one expects of a legend.
