Synopsis by Mark Deming

An unexpected accident threatens to destroy one couple's relationship in this independent drama shot on digital video. Kimi (Maki Nishiyama) and Osamu (Mutsuo Yoshioka) are a couple living in a Japanese coastal town, where Osamu makes his living working beside Kimi's dad (Hitoshi Hasegawa) at a plant that processes waste material from nuclear power facilities. While the potential danger of his job seems obvious, Osamu doesn't give it much thought until he's exposed to a high dose of radiation during a workplace accident. Along with several other health problems, the radiation makes it impossible for Osamu to father a child, and Kimi begins to question his suitability as a mate. Goodbye was the first feature film from writer and director Bunyo Kimura, and was an official selection at the 2009 Rotterdam International Film Festival.
