Synopsis by Mark Deming

The personal and environmental consequences of a major mining operation are chronicled in this documentary from Australia. After closing down a massive mining project in Indonesia, a small army of workers dismantle the mine's hardware and pack it up for shipment to Guinea, where a multi-national firm will be setting up a new mineral harvesting business. The people of the village where the new mine is being dug have mixed feelings about the project -- some are grateful for the money and jobs that will be brought to the community, others are wary of the detrimental effects to the environment, and many in the Muslim nation aren't certain they trust the team of outsiders invading their community. The mining company also has to deal with the sticky issue of keeping local gold miners, who have been making ends meet by gleaning the previous metal from the local soil, off what is now their property without seeming like bullies. And the men who have come to Guinea struggle with the toll of hard work, loneliness and separation from their friends and family, with many of the workers drowning their sorrows in alcohol. Originally produced for Australian television, End Of The Rainbow also made the rounds of the international film festival circuit, and was well received at Amsterdam's 2008 International Documentary Film Festival.
