The title makes it sound like a cheap monster movie, but this horror outing is actually a surprisingly ambitious and viscerally effective anthology. All of the tales have an EC Comics feel to them that makes The Offspring come off like a low-budget descendent of Creepshow. However, The Offspring replaces that film's comic-book transitions with a town haunted by its violent history, a concept that is effectively set up in a framing device that utilizes Vincent Price telling various gruesome tales from the town's past and present. The stories occasionally go a bit too far with their desire to push the envelope; for instance, the opening story, which tackles such taboos as incest and necrophilia in addition to the usual murders and supernatural apparitions, is guaranteed to make many viewers run for the door. However, those with strong stomachs will find a few gems in The Offspring. One of the best stories is a tale about a criminal (Terry Kiser) on the lam who stumbles across the secret to immortality, only to have it backfire horrifically due to his greed. There is also an intensely creepy tale set during the Civil War that depicts a ragtag band of Southern soldiers stumbling into a town run by children who have re-written the Bible to fit their sadistic needs. Genre fans will also appreciate The Offspring's impressive cast, which features everyone from Cameron Mitchell to Martine Beswicke. In the end, The Offspring is too uneven and brutal for the average viewer but hardcore horror buffs are likely to appreciate its gruesome delights.
