As the world celebrates the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall, two young East German men, Veit and Tom, are inspired to head west towards America's legendary city of San Francisco. Despite having little money between them and virtually no knowledge of the English language, they manage to make it as far as New Mexico, where they meet a beautiful woman named Zoey. When Viet and Tom both develop feelings for Zoey, their dreams and their friendships threaten to fall apart before they can reach their intended destination.
