Review by Todd Kristel

This is an interesting film even though it doesn't have a plot in the conventional sense. Instead, it's a collection of short glimpses into Iranian life that are connected by the common theme of women's roles in society. The Exam could be considered a feminist critique since it addresses how women are caught in the conflict between traditional and modern values, including the ways that their life options are constrained by their roles as potential or current wives and mothers. Fortunately, the movie isn't particularly didactic or heavy handed; it allows us to peak into people's lives without belaboring any particular message. This film, which takes place in real time, flows seamlessly from one group of people to the next without dwelling too long on any particular group; consequently, it doesn't get boring even though it starts slowly and contains only a few moments of real action. Also, the filmmaker displays a good eye for nuance and detail and shows sympathy toward most of the characters in the movie. The Exam has a lot to offer viewers even though not a lot actually happens in it.
