Review by Karl Williams

The sophomore directorial effort of producer Rob Cohen, this standard biography is a middling affair, covering all the salient points of a legendary star's life and career without ever trespassing too deeply below the surface for a more meaningful take on its subject. As Bruce Lee, lead actor Jason Scott Lee is a casting coup. Although he's not given anything internal with which to struggle, Lee is as adequate as the material will allow while reenacting the protagonist's simmering frustration with the small-mindedness and racism he encounters from a mother-in-law, the motion-picture business, and even other Chinese martial artists. Where the actor really breathes life into his subject is with his skill in recreating the legendary performer's physical bravura. In these martial arts sequences, star and director create a daffy, joyous energy that the rest of the film sorely lacks. These welcome scenes don't balance out the rest of the film's melodramatic pomposity, however. Seeking more to lionize than understand, Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993) is a glossed-over hagiography that strives to be little more than a garden-variety made-for-TV movie.
