Dolores Del Rio backed out of playing Marilyn in Don't Bet on Blondes (working title: Not on Your Life) mere days before production commenced and Warner Bros. substituted Claire Dodd, who was playing Della Street to Warren William's Perry Mason at the time. It was not a felicitous replacement, however, the resulting comedy remaining an insipid affair with a leading lady not quite pretty enough to warrant the description as "the most beautiful dame on Broadway." The supporting cast is fine, though, and there is a good running joke involving an unseen lady named Hilda Schwanenfluegel.
