Review by Jeremy Wheeler

A rosy colored look into the adult film industry in the 1980s, Desperately Seeking Seka is a fun ride through the long-gone days of scripts, natural breasts, and moustaches in the porno business. Focusing on the sexy starlet Seka, the film follows Swedish writer Stefan Nylén as he wades his way through the inner-sanctum of past adult stars and filmmakers looking for the woman that had his heart when he was younger. What comes across immediately is the genuine and humorous love for the films of the bygone pre-video era, and it's genuinely infectious. Featuring numerous sexy and outrageous '80s porn clips throughout the movie, the filmmakers have created a love letter to not only Seka, but to that time and place in history. By the time the hip Swedish writer finally finds the aging star, you're almost tempted to go seek some of her classy hits yourself. However entertaining, there are a few problems that tend to stick out in the film -- mainly, the actual meeting of Seka is a bit anticlimactic and just sort of happens with no real buildup. Also, while the editing is near brilliant in the epileptic pre-credit sequence and manages to keep up a tight pace throughout the rest of the picture, the way the interviews were cut together using the same shot of Chicago or L.A. over and over again is downright annoying. Originally shown at festivals with an 83-minute running time, Desperately Seeking Seka now exists as only a 53-minute version. The extra footage might have actually fleshed the movie out in a welcome way, considering the quality of the deleted scenes on the DVD. Still, the doc is well worth checking out and might even spurn some kitschy retro-porn delight in you by the time it ends.
