Review by Jeremy Wheeler

Before he hit big with his Mummy franchise, Stephen Sommers set out to make a fun-filled B-movie sea monster flick - and that's exactly what Deep Rising is. Action and humor play off edge-of-your-seat tension as our unlikely cast of characters battle to stay alive and hold off 'till the movie's big explosive climax. Knowing exactly what kind of movie they were dealing with, the actors jump head-first into the mix as dialogue gets chewed up and spat out while big guns fire endlessly and even bigger things explode around them. Treat Williams especially seems to be having a ball here, playing exactly the type of role that Brendan Fraser made big with Sommers just a year later - manly, a little dumb, and quick to throw out a wisecrack when needed. In fact, the comparisons between Sommers' more popular efforts and their nastier little brother Deep Rising could be easily drawn and probably should be pointed out to more people. If it means that a wider audience will find this gem, than that's great - because this sucker is big, outrageous, and a whole lotta fun.
