Review by Buzz McClain

You keep hoping for some comic relief, but there is none coming. True to the title, Creepy Crawlers just keeps getting creepier, starting out with one bug -- it always begins with just one, doesn't it? -- until the landscape and sky are littered with large, wiggly, shiny, hungry, computer-generated roaches. More of a visual curiosity (a la Them!) than a psychological horror (a la The Birds), Creepy Crawlers' main attraction is waiting for the money shot -- you know, when the main bad guy has his face covered in bugs. You get that shot, and more -- what happens to the sheriff is particularly grim -- in a formula horror film that follows a slightly different formula than others of its ill ilk. Production values are pretty good, with particular kudos to the cockroaches, which are rendered in stomach-turning realism. The main stars are also effective in giving their characters more than one dimension. Those frightened by insect movies should look elsewhere; those who want to be frightened by an insect movie, but with tastefully (if you can believe it) few gore effects, need look no further.
