Review by Craig Butler

As far as scripting is concerned, Come September is indistinguishable from any number of sex comedies that flooded the screen in the '50s and '60s. September follows a predictable formula: come up with a high concept premise, throw in some supposedly "naughty" bits (but make sure they fall far short of genuinely risqué or, god forbid, sexy), mix in a whole barrel full of (hopefully) comedic situations and then shake. The better results of this formula tend to top it off with flashes of wit and some genuinely funny moments; however, September falls short in this department. What saves it is its cast, especially the fiery Gina Lollobrigida. It's not that Lollobrigida is turning in an especially good performance, but there's so much sizzle to her that she heats this otherwise gooey mixture into a fairly tasty soufflé. Rock Hudson plays off of her well, and while Hudson is no great actor either, he does have the light touch that material like this demands and is right at home. They're supported by a delightfully crafty Walter Slezak, as well as some stunning locales. All together, not a bad way to fritter away a couple of hours.
