Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Previously filmed in 1918, Edwin Baird's play City of Purple Dreams was given a second cinematic go-round in 1928. Essentially a fairy tale, the story concerns a covetous young derelict, Daniel Randolph (Robert Frazer), who vows to get even for a slight perpetrated by wheat magnate Symington Otis (David Torrence). Pulling himself up by his bootstraps, Randolph makes a success of himself, not only taking over Otis's business, but claiming the old man's daughter, Kathleen (Jacqueline Gadsdon), as his bride. All of this is observed with alarm by Randolph's former girlfriend Esther Strom (Barbara Bedford), a dyed-in-the-wool Bolshevik. City of Purple Dreams was released by Rayart, which soon would metamorphose into Monogram Pictures.
