Synopsis by Sally Barber

The Camera: Early Photography and Moving Pictures series tracks the development of photography as an art form. Volumes one through seven examine the evolution of the tool, while volumes eight through ten focus on the technological contributions leading to modern filmmaking. This volume features two segments. "Outback" concentrates on early use of the camera by Europeans who toted the bulky equipment on treks, using the new art form to document their lifestyles in places such as Africa, Australia, and North and South America. The second segment, "News Flashes," examines how the early camera recorded international events in the 1880s. The documentary films reflect society's enthusiasm surrounding the emerging medium.
