Review by Buzz McClain

"What was that shark movie?" asks one of the characters at the beginning of Blood Surf. "Oh yeah, Jaws." As if anyone could forget, or that anyone involved with this low-budget, low-thrill mutant creature thriller didn't have Steven Spielberg's big fish classic at the forefront of their minds while shooting this. How else to explain the scene wherein a crusty, bent-on-vengeance captain (Duncan Regehr) gets chomped in his sinking boat by the very creature he's trying to destroy? Or those kicking feet-underwater shots from the crocodile's perspective? There also are borrowings from Godzilla (the ripping up the dock chase) and Jurassic Park (the monster eye in the window gag), among other scenes that lack originality. It's best not to compare this one to any of those, and simply take it for what it is: A decently made teen slasher movie where the crazed killer happens to be a gigantic crocodile. There's a little humor -- but it's forced -- and some interesting gore, but nothing groundbreaking, and the monster is kind of stiff and seemingly disinterested. Like most of the audience.
