Synopsis by Mark Deming

Near the end of 2008, Israel launched Operation Cast Lead, a military offensive against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip with the stated aim of stopping the firing of rockets into Israel. Three weeks later, the fighting was halted by a cease-fire, and the residents of the Gaza Strip began the familiar routine of rebuilding after a short-lived conflict. But this brief round of fighting left considerable destruction and seven hundred civilians dead; how long can Gaza continue to bounce back? Filmmaker Nicolas Wadimoff was in Gaza with a small camera crew just weeks after the skirmish ended, and Aisheen (Still Alive In Gaza) is a documentary which offers a look into the lives the people of this embattled area as they try to live ordinary lives under difficult circumstances. Bombs are still bursting and distribution of supplies is chaotic, but most of the people of Gaza continue to go through the routine of a normal life as they care for their children, reassemble their homes and look to another day. Aisheen (Still Alive In Gaza) also features performances by DARG Team, a hip-hop group from Gaza; the film was an official selection at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival.
