  • In one of Celtic coach Red Auerbach's most memorable deals, McHale was selected in the 1980 draft with the third pick, which was acquired by Boston from the Golden State Warriors, along with Robert Parish, for the top pick, used by Golden State to select Joe Barry Carroll. The deal helped establish a Celtic dynasty.
  • Scored a career-high 56 points against the Detroit Pistons on March 3, 1985, nine days before Larry Bird's career-high of 60 against the Atlanta Hawks.
  • Former NBA coach Hubie Brown told the Boston Globe that McHale was the league's "most difficult low-post player to defend."
  • Inducted into the Minnesota State High School League Hall of Fame in 1992.
  • A member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, McHale won three NBA titles and was a seven-time all-star.
