  • In 1997, his father bought land in Florida's Haines City so he could build a track in the backyard for James.

  • Named by Teen People in 2003 as among "20 Teens Who Will Change the World."
  • Referred to by some as the "Tiger Woods of supercross," as he is the first black to dominate the sport.
  • In a 2004 interview with the St. Petersburg Times, said: "It does feel good to be the first (black) ever, but I honestly don't sit here and think about it a lot."
  • Haines City, in 2007, marked "James Stewart Week" to honor the then-21-year-old motocross champion. 
  • In 2008, became second rider ever to complete an undefeated season, winning all 24 races he entered. (Ricky Carmichael was the first.)
  • In 2010, had surgery on his right wrist following an injury in a crash.
