- Raced BMX bikes at a young age and was ranked second in Britain, fifth in Europe and ninth in the world.
- Began concentrating on track cycling upon joining the City of Edinburgh Racing Club in 1994.
- Was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to cycling in the 2005 New Year Honours.
- In the 2008 New Years Honours, received a knighthood at Buckingham Palace for his services to sport.
- Won three gold medals in Beijing 2008, making him Scotland's most successful Olympian, and the first Briton to win three gold medals in a single Olympic games since 1908, making him the most successful Olympic male cyclist of all time.
