Mystery » Giallo
A type of European, chiefly Italian thriller generally combining a complex murder mystery with an emphasis on stylish visuals, flamboyant music, and violent shock effects. Typical giallo plots concern a mysterious killer (usually wearing a dark hat, trenchcoat, and black gloves), who is eventually revealed as a member of the cast through detective work by a police inspector or witness. The word "giallo," refers to the yellow covers of a series of Italian paperback mysteries. The giallo films were most popular in the late '60s and early '70s, when they usurped the more standard mystery of the German krimi as the primary strain of European thriller.
