Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
The young man in this story is in a bad way. He has been at a reformatory for some time but cannot even get along with the other inmates, much less the counselors and authorities. Accompanied by another boy, he runs away during a brawl which has distracted his keepers. He hits an elderly woman storekeeper while robbing her store for food and callously leaves. She could be dead for all he knows. Later, when he is picked up by the police, he discovers that his victim is the mother of one of the few people who has ever treated him decently, and feels remorse for the first time in his young life.
