Synopsis by Mark Deming

An artist finds rewriting reality isn't as simple as he thought in this independent drama from Japan. Hattori (Ryo Iwase) is a comic book artist who has been in a deep funk ever since his girlfriend left him for Mikuni (Kazuki Namioka), a well-known professional fighter. Hattori has been assigned to draw a story about Mikuni, and he's understandably unenthusiastic about the project. While researching his artwork, Hattori meets Tamura (Kaname Endo), an aspiring boxer with far more ambition than skill. Tamura is a loyal follower of Hattori's work and his great dream is to someday fight Mikuni, so Hattori decides to make his wish a reality, on paper at least, by creating a story in which up-and-coming Tamura squares off against Mikuni in the ring. While the new comic gives Hattori a chance for some mental payback, the longer he works on the story the more the line between fiction and reality fades. Yellow Kid was the first feature film from writer and director Mariko Tetsuya.
