Synopsis by Mark Deming

A woman who has been worn down by life searches for solace through love in this drama from Chinese filmmaker Diao Yi'nan. Wu Hongyan (Liu Dan) is a woman in her mid-30s who has been on her own since the death of her husband. Wu supports herself working in a women's prison, serving as a bailiff for the prisoners on death row and sometimes assisting with executions. After a week of this soul-crushing work, Wu spends her days off at a dance hall, where single men and women meet for dates arranged by a matchmaking service. While Wu struggles to put on a brave and cheery disposition, with each weekend it seems increasingly obvious that she's not going to find the sort of man she's been looking for, and a few of her dates stop just short of rape. Wu thinks her luck may have finally changed when she meets quiet but sensitive Li Jun (Qi Dao), but in time she discovers he carries a painful secret -- his wife was executed at the prison where Wu works. Ye Che (aka Night Train) was an official selection at the 2009 Cinequest Film Festival.
