Injustice is the enemy in this slow-moving story of a perfidious landowner who lords it over his poverty-stricken neighbors to such an irrational degree that he kills the peasant father of a friend of his daughter's. She herself was upbraided for her friendships with the lower classes, and now in the face of her father's atrocity there is no one willing to stand up for the victimized family because in this social milieu, the wealthy are never wrong.
