Synopsis by Rose of Sharon Winter

The bloody battles of World War II were fought on two fronts, in Europe and in the Pacific, as the Allies engaged in a life and death struggle with the Axis powers. The ultimate victory of the Allied Powers was dearly paid for in millions of war casualties. This program is part of a series that chronicles that epic fight for freedom. This episode turns to events in the European theater, where the war was fought in the trenches of the European countries, as well as in the Atlantic. Two segments are included in the volume: "The Battle of Britain" and "The Normandy Invasion." Archival film clips, photographs, personal recollections of veterans, and commentary by historians recount the heroics and tragedies that took place in the European theater of the war.
