Because she feels she has a mission in life, New York society girl Juanita Holland (Elaine Hammerstein) breaks off her engagement and travels to rural Kentucky to teach illiterates. She finds herself smack in the middle of a feud between the McBriar and Harvey clans, and she fails miserably at her attempts to bring peace. After one of the Harveys is killed, "Bad Anse" Harvey (W. Lawton Butt) offers to try things Juanita's way and let the courts deal with the situation. The killer is convicted and sentenced to be hanged. Bad Anse gets the feeling that the McBriars will now come gunning for him, and he's right -- while he's visiting Juanita, the house is surrounded by McBriars. Bad Anse is seriously wounded, and the horrified Juanita grabs a gun and mows down a few McBriars in retaliation. Now that she's proved herself a real Harvey, Bad Anse decides to make her an official one by marrying her.
