Also known as Without a Soul, the 5-reel Lola was another successful filmic collaboration between the husband and wife team of director James Young and actress Clara Kimball Young. The star is cast as Lola, the daughter of a farsighted scientist. Lola's dad has developed a invention that can temporarily restore life to the dead, but he is unable to find any human guinea pigs to test it out. The sudden, tragic death of Lola enables the grieving scientist to put his invention into operation. Upon being revived, the previously sweet and virtuous Lola is transformed into a thoroughly shameless hussy. She gives her former sweetheart the air and embarks upon a series of reckless sexual escapades (discreetly photographed, though the audience is fully aware of what is going on). When the effects of the machine wear off, the dying Lola begs her father for another jolt, whereupon he tearfully but determinedly destroys the demon invention. The notion of a soulless "synthetic woman" would serve as the basis of the oft-filmed fantasy piece Alraune.
